back cover | FLE is listed as 1955-1965, should be 1953-1956 |
41 | Sidecar axles are bolted not pressed in |
88 | The difference between handshift and footshift inner primaries are,
the handshift primary has a splash guard whereas the footshift does not.
The '58 up inner primary has a different upper rear mounting tab and has the nipple moved forward. Photo comparison of various year primaries. |
90 | The lower inner primary sure looks like a '58 - '64. See above link to photo comparison. |
104 | Comment regarding original versus reproduction brake operating cam shafts (parts 4054-37, 4054-36, etc.). The originals have the shaft off centre to help with the leverage a bit. This is why they are marked with an arrow pointing to the outside edge. The reproductions that I've seen do not have the shaft off centre from the cam and can be installed either way. |
150 | Early '41 case did not have the long re-inforcement ribs like the later cases did. |
194 | 30-'35 VL's have seven head bolts (not eight) |
253 | There is a difference between low speed spring collars (seats) that is not mentioned. The seat for a 74 OHV is about twice as thick as the seat for other models. |
275, 276 & 277 | The discussion about the notched shifter gear. Actually the neutral switch operates when pushed out by the notch not by dropping into the notch. The notch is made by machining down a portion of the circumference but leaving the original diameter where the notch is. |
278 | The retaining ring on the late shifter shaft is installed on the sprocket side of the case, not on the starter side. |
322 | In addition to the different big twin foot clutch pedals there are two styles of foot lever springs (#2412-36). One is made entirely of one piece. The other had the spring part made from one piece and the hook and eye ends made from separate pieces. |
339 | tight fit onto the motor's tapered sprocket shaft. -> tight fit onto the motor's sprocket shaft (the 1955 and newer sprocket shaft is splined) |
340 | Regarding steel clutch discs, there is a note stating that some aftermarket discs do not have any buffer assemblies. In fact Harley themselves went to this style of disc during the last few years that they used this clutch. |
351 | The photo caption indicates that #2426-36 type 3 is used through 1967 for all models and through 1978 for footshift models! It was only used through 1964, #37052-65 came into use after that, however, the text does have this described correctly. |
399 | For electrical safety I like to assemble switches with #6730 Delrin washer as fitted to later bikes. |
462 | Does this bike have a front stand? Again on page 524 when referring to this bike a front stand is mentioned. But I don't see any evidence of either the front stand that mounts to the forks (#3001-36) or the accessory stand that mounts to the footboard stud (#13040-36) in the pictures. |
463 | Regarding front safety guards it is stated "The first style, used on 1936 61 and 1937-1940 Big Twins,". The '36 front safety guard is different from the later knuckle parts. |
464 | It is stated that the #49154-57 rear safety guard is "the #78500-49 guard less the radio carrier brackets.". This is wrong. The #49154-57 guard is the #49154-41 (#13030-41) guard in chrome. It too was a radio issue rear guard but has a significantly different shape than the #78500-49 guard. The -49 guard is shown in the photo on page 464 and is rectangular shaped and much wider than the standard guard. The -41/-57 guard is shown on the bike on page 466 and is more of a square shape and it is only slightly wider than the standard guard. |
486 | The last lock washer is identified as a Servi-Car box tie bar lock washer. I have no idea what one of those looks like, but the lock washer in the picture sure looks like a #87136-36 (#6016-36) sidecar connection bolt lock washer. |
513 | Anniversary Yellow is missing |
540 | The CHP photo caption states "The tool box bracket had to be relocated for the CHP to use their own choice of rear speedometer.". But referencing the note on page 27 it states "The right side was needed for the type of rear wheel siren the CHP used.". |
577 | 48 U caption states "Note the second sub-type of the 1941-1964 foot clutch lever with it's pronounced dog-leg, 1948 Big Twins are the first to use this type of lever.", but in fact late 1946 was when the pedal first appeared as stated on page 322. |
610 | The lower photo caption states "FLE motorcycles are hand shift models ...", but on the previous page (and on all model lists since the FLE was introduced in 1953) an FLEF model is listed. |
612 | 1956 last year features should include the FLE model. |
614 | as noted earlier (page 464) I disagree that 1957 was the only year for the Bertha safety guard. It was the only year it was available in chrome though. |
