Grand Duchess Tatiana Nicholaievna Romanova

1897-1918

Childhood 1897-1907

On May 29, 1897 a second daughter was born to the reigning Tsar and Tsarina of Russia.  The parents were overjoyed to have another child.  Here is the entry Nicholas made in his diary that day.  "The second bright happy day in our family: at 10:40 in the morning the Lord blessed us with a daughter - Tatiana. Poor Alix suffered all night without shutting her eyes for a moment, and at 8 o'clock went downstairs to Amama's [Dowager Empress] bedroom. Thank God this time it all went quickly and safely, and I did not feel nervously exhausted. Towards one o'clock the little one was bathed and Yanyshev read some prayers. Mama arrived with Xenia; we lunched together. At 4 o'clock there was a Te Deum. Tatiana weighs 8 3/4 pounds and is 54 centimetres long. Our eldest is very funny with her. Read and wrote telegrams.."

Tatiana and Olga were instantly close friends, and were later called the Big Pair.  The happy little family soon had another addition Maria in 1899 and Anastasia in 1901.  Then in 1904, an heir and tsarevich finally arrived - Aleksey.  However, when he was just a six weeks old, they noticed bleeding from his navel, and then large bruises.  He was diagnosed with hemophilia, a rare genetic disorder passed down from Queen Victoria of England.  Hemophiliacs blood can not clot properly, which can lead to large, painful internal hemorrhages.  Even a slight scrape could cause an attack.  Thus the whole family became even more protective of their little heir - worrying about a deadly attack.

The family celebrates the birth of another daughter - this time Anastasia.  Tatiana is on the far left cuddled up to her father.

The family, now complete with an heir, commemorates Aleksey's Christening.  Tatiana is again on the left, this time leaning on her mother's arm.

Tatiana was always very close to her mother.  Of all the daughters, she was said to resemble her mother most - in both actions and appearances.  Tatiana apparently was quite skilled at needle crafts such as sewing, crocheting, and embroidery.  Tatiana was also very religious, again like her mother.  Because of these things, Tatiana seemed very mature.  Her sisters nicknamed her "The Governess" because of her bossy attitude.
